    Level 5 Specialist Teaching Assistant

Develop the specialist knowledge and skills needed to champion inclusive education and support learners with additional needs.

    Programme Overview

    • Empower Teaching Assistants to go beyond

This programme enables experienced Teaching Assistants to progress beyond traditional classroom support, developing the advanced knowledge and skills needed to make a greater impact on teaching, learning, and pupil outcomes. Apprentices are empowered to lead targeted interventions, support learners with complex and additional needs, and contribute to the delivery of inclusive, evidence-informed educational practice.

    • Develop Expert Specialist Support

Through the programme, learners develop specialist expertise in areas such as SEND, social and emotional wellbeing, and targeted learner support, enabling them to work more independently and effectively alongside teaching staff. By enhancing their ability to identify barriers to learning, implement tailored support strategies, and champion inclusive practice, Specialist Teaching Assistants become an invaluable asset in helping every learner achieve their full potential.

    • Develop and support SEND provision

This apprenticeship is an effective way to upskill experienced support staff who are ready to take on more specialist responsibilities. Employers can enrol existing employees to strengthen areas such as SEND, behaviour support, targeted interventions and specialist classroom practice.

By supporting the delivery of SEND provision and targeted interventions, SEND Specialist Teaching Assistants help learners with additional needs engage more effectively in education, build confidence, and make meaningful academic, social, and emotional progress.

The apprentice will work towards the Specialist Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship standard at Level 5, focusing on the SEND pathway.

Throughout the apprenticeship, learners will complete apprenticeship assessment activities (formerly End-Point Assessment) designed to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and behaviours required by the apprenticeship standard.

Assessment may take place throughout the programme and can include a range of methods, depending on the apprenticeship standard. These may include projects, professional discussions, presentations, observations and other assessment activities.

We will work closely with our learners and employers throughout the programme to ensure apprentices are supported and prepared to successfully achieve their apprenticeship.

Learners will build skills in supporting independence, adapting approaches to meet individual needs, using assistive technology, and working collaboratively with education professionals and external agencies. The programme also develops understanding of safeguarding, wellbeing, equality and inclusion, alongside reflective and professional practice within specialist support roles.

The Level 5 Specialist Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship supports progression into senior support, SEND, inclusion, and pastoral roles, while also providing a pathway towards teacher training. Schools and trusts benefit from developing specialist expertise in-house, strengthening support provision, and creating clear career progression routes for staff.

    Unlock the benefits
