Two north east young men have won apprenticeships at expanding manufacturing company, DUCO, with help from Access Training.
Christopher Wade, 19, from South Shields and Michael Glasspool, 21, from Howdon, Wallsend are working towards business administration apprenticeships within the company’s finance and cost control departments.
DUCO is a world leader in the design and manufacture of underwater umbilical systems and recent contract wins have opened up vacancies for apprentices and experienced employees.
Before being appointed by DUCO, Christopher was working part-time for retailer, Next, after completing a two year media studies course, and wasn’t sure what to do.
He said: “To be honest, I didn’t have a clue where I was going. I saw the vacancy for this apprenticeship and thought it looked like a great opportunity. I applied for it and within a couple of days Access Training was interviewing me. I’m really enjoying it; I’m looking forward to progressing in the job and my qualification.”
Annette Mullen, training and development coordinator at DUCO, said: “We have worked with Access Training for quite a while now because we find they recruit the high calibre apprentices we require and provide quality training and support. We prefer to develop the skills we need internally, as far as possible, so apprenticeships are an important part of our recruitment strategy.”
The apprentices are based at Cobalt Business Park and Walker Riverside and their duties include liaising with clients over account queries, processing invoices and managing mail distribution for DUCO’s factory in Walker.
Access Training manages the recruitment and selection of apprentices for many north east businesses. The Gateshead-based company is the only training provider in Tyne and Wear to hold the Training Quality Standard (TQS).
Managing director at Access, Malcolm Armstrong, said: “We are proud to be helping DUCO hopefully recruit its star employees of the future.”
